Well, I'm pulling my hair out a little bit. I somehow managed to lose the haircode for the messy pigtails I used on my easter bunnies. The .txt file I saved the haircode to was blank?? All my other saved codes are fine but that one file was totally empty. I literally have no idea how or when that happened.
I recovered the code from a backup of one of the bunnies, but I hex from the babyzrez and the way I do addballz in PW puts everything in a very specific format that I really like... but apparently that gets changed in a .baby file so now everything looks weird and confusing to me! I managed to figure out which balls are which and I labelled everything to the best of my ability, but jeez, how annoying. It's going to be really difficult for me to make any tweaks/modifications/improvements to this hairstyle in the future now. Seriously, NO idea how the file got emptied out, I imagine I must've backspaced over everything at some point and accidentally saved?? But I don't think I've had the file open since hexing the bunnies and I know it was fine while I was hexing them.
I guess it's whatever now, at least I recovered the code. I should get a special usb to put backups of all my haircodes on immediately after I finish them to prevent future disasters.
I felt the need to rant about it and I figured this was as good a place as any to do that, so //thumbs up
ahhhhhhhhhhh that is so annoying! i'm glad you were at least able to recover it from one of the baby files. that's one of the reasons i like hexing on the .baby files tbh. it's super easy to change things/update the baby cause everything is annoted in their file.
I have lost the .cat / .dog file for some of my hexies and hate when I only have the .pet file because the way I set everything up I am able to make the changes I want so much easier in the breedfile and it can be so frustrating to loose work or make the future changes more difficult!
I recently shared my hexing process in Jazz's hexing motivation thread and figured I should post it in my own thread as well! <3 It's probably weird, I have no idea what the other hexers around here do, but here's how I go about hexing a baby:
Having a general theme in mind helps me a lot, it can be something more specific like "valentine's day themed" or something vague like "natural colors." It's nice to having a starting point to work from.
If I want to make a new hairstyle this is where I go look for references. Pinterest is pretty good for finding different hairstyles, and ofc just Google or something works too! Hair Colors Ideas is nice for finding hair color combinations that look pretty. Lovely Dyed Locks is great for both style and color, it has a really in-depth search system made up of drop-down menus so you can find exactly the sort of thing you want!
I like doing a mockup of what I want to do. I'm a really visual worker so it helps to be able to try out colors and tattoos and hair bmps and such to see what looks good together. Earlier in this thread I shared the little template/base thing I use for that.
Here's where I go into PW and start working on the hair if I'm making a new style. If not, this is where I'd grab the codes for my existing hairstyles and choose the bits I want to use to paste into the BabyzRez.dll and then I pull my hair out a little making the linez and stuff work if I need to change them.
Ya I hex from the .dll, apparently most people here hex directly from a .baby file but I can't wrap my head around that, how do people do it?? Nothing is labelled properly, how do you find anything, how do you know what's important and what's not. The .dll is meticulously labelled and annotated and I appreciate that thank you Babyz developers for being so nice to me. Anyway
If I'm making a new style, I go back and forth between PW, LNZ Pro and the game a whole lot to check and tweak stuff. It's important to me that my styles look good from the sides and back too so I have to modify stuff a lot to get everything looking good and make sure things don't clip or move wildly out of control or whatever. Eventually I get to a point where the tweaks I'm making are small and precise enough that using PW is more of a hinderance than a help, so I close it and just move stuff around manually bit-by-bit in LNZ Pro.
Change colors of things, do freckles and tattoos, probably change my mockup like 50 times while I'm in the middle of hexing cause I am wishy-washy as heck and change my mind a lot, blah blah blah hexing happens
Check stuff in the game until I'm dizzy to make sure the kid looks as nice in-game as it does in the mockup, keep changing stuff until the kid that pops out makes me smile

I started out trying to be helpful and serious but I can only stay serious for like .2 seconds I'm so sorry
Didn't I say I was gonna take a quick break from hexing?? lol oops I lied //thumbs up
Here's a hair experiment I'm working on. I've challenged myself to make a hairstyle that looks super linez-heavy using exactly 0 linez! Hair tattoos are really fun, I love how they move in-game <3 Clipping issues are a nightmare tho
