in this lesson i will teach you about lines, or "linez" as our beloved game series likes to call them. linez are used to connect two addballs together. it is helpful to think of linez as playing connect the dots with your addballs (thanks to ember for the great analogy). if you have two addballs and you place a line between them, it creates a visual bridge between the two balls.
i'll show you what that looks like. let's scroll down to the [Linez] section of betsy's file. it looks like this:
using linez may seem like an advanced hexing technique, but they are actually super simple. i am going to show you how they work by creating a new one.
first, scroll to the bottom of your [Linez] section and copy/paste the very last line, similar to how you did to make a new addball. it should look like this:
now, let's change a few things about that line. instead of 1 0 at the very end of the line, you want it to read -1 -1. this makes it so the line doesn't have an outline, and is the ideal setting when working with hair addballs.
after that, we're going to change the first two numbers. if you recall, at the end of the addball lesson i had you create two new addballs, ball #148 and ball #149, which looked like this:
with this line, we are going to try and connect those two addballs. so let's change the first two numbers in the line to 148 149 so that the game knows which addballs we want to connect. your line should now look like this:
148 149 -1 -1 -1 -1 100 100 -1 -1
now save the file and open your game. betsy should now look like this:
as you can see, the line we added made the two balls connect straight across! now, obviously this is a silly example, but addballs and linez can be used together to create some amazing hairstyles.
for example, this is my "rapunzel in pigtails" hairstyle:
this was one of the first hairstyles i ever made using linez and i think it's a really nice visual example of what can be done using addballs and linez together. you can see i used differently-sized addballs to form the shape of the pigtails and then connected them together using linez so that they created straight strands rather than a line of lumpy balls.
one important thing to keep in mind is that there is no limit to how many addballs you can have, but there is a limit on how many linez you can have. after a certain amount the lines will just stop working/showing up. this linez limit also affects what clothes a baby can wear. if a baby has a lot of linez, they might have trouble wearing clothing items that also use a lot of linez because eventually, when you put them together, the baby + clothing hit the linez limit, and some of the linez on the clothing will disappear. the less linez your baby uses the more linezy clothing they can wear! this is another reason why it has become popular to create hairstyles using bmp textures rather than entirely addballs and linez. of course a linezy hairstyle isn't the end of the world for most people (especially if it's for a pretty hairstyle) but it's a good thing to remember as you create hairstyles!
