haaalp please: clothes hexing basics!

HELLO DEARS. when i first joined this amazing forum, i REALLY wanted to start hexing babyz for people and get really involved in that - but hairstyles have been a major stumbling block for me. after quietly experimenting behind the scenes, i haven't created anything i'm happy with and it's really been getting me down. perhaps i'm just not in the right place, but i do feel guilty about it.

instead i've been learning how to hex clothes, so i can hopefully set up a lovely mootique and at least have something to offer that way! BUT being a noob, i've run into a couple of issues.

1) first, how do the breed id numbers work? i didn't quite understand the note about this on babyz.org. i have tried five different random numbers and none of them have worked (the item doesn't show up in the closet), so i'm not sure how to find/use one that does!

2) i'm sure it's just me, but having checked the clothing bases thread in the milk resource, i'm not quite clear on where to download clothing bases such as sharon's tutu! or is it standard practise to base your new tutu on an existing tutu you already own (as long as you credit the original creator)?

3) what are the best settings to use in photoshop when editing a tinker template (anti alias, contiguous etc)? when i created a template for my test onesie and applied the bmp as a pattern, the edges were slightly pixellated. argh.

4) finally, do you have any recommendations for places to find pixels and patterns? obvs there's pixel-soup tumblr and things, deviant art, and good old google search, but i just wondered if i was missing anything!

1) Breed ID numbers are weird?? I don't know if there's a specific way of finding numbers that work, but I find changing breed IDs as numbers instead of as hex codes is a bit easier! For example I found 28000 worked and have been slowly going up from there - 28001, 28002, 28003 - for each item of clothing. I think there's a list of working IDs somewhere on Milk, but I wouldn't be able to tell you where it is;;

2) I use a set of a bunch of bases put together by 𝓳amie 👽! The download can be found in this post. I'm sure there's another version of that download since that one doesn't include as many bases as set I have, but I couldn't seem to find the one I downloaded.

3) I definitely would not have anti-aliasing checked when editing tinker templates, but whether or not you have contiguous...ness... on is sort of based on what you're trying to select. It's something you gotta get used to and come up with your own method for I guess?? I hated tinkering when I started hexing clothes, but now I kinda enjoy it. It's repetitive in a relaxing sort of way once you have a good way of doing it.

4) Cocorini has veeery cute patterns that I use a lot! I haven't specifically used them for clothes, but they definitely could be used for clothes. Subtlepatterns has tons of nice patterns that could be useful. Colourlovers is great too, it has TONS of recolorable patterns! You can make your own patterns (and palettes) as well.

With ID numbers I just type in something super random over and over until it ends up working, I don't bother being organized about it like everyone else does LOL but really the number is just, whatever the game likes
rileys way seems a lot more organized tho so go with that but I'm pretty sure its whatever the game accepts that another item isnt using

Regarding ID numbers, I always hex with an empty closet. Also there's a thread in the resource section that has ID numbers and whom they're assigned to. Obviously we will clash at some point since there are only so many. But maybe you can use some of those as a starting point.

1) Breed ID numbers - I believe that the lowest possible working ID number is 14848 and the highest possible working ID number is 32665, which gives a ton of numbers you can use. What I've done is pick a starting number in that range and just gone up one for every new clothes item so that I know my clothes won't cause glitches with each other. So if I made a tutu on ID 14848, then the tights to go with it would be 14849.

3) Your best friend with Tinker bases in Photoshop is the Layer Mask. What you gotta do (with super-professional screenshots):

a. Open your tinker base.

b. Add another layer with the pattern on it right above the Tinker base.

c. It looks like this:


d. Hover your mouse between the layers where the yellow dot (it's a dot okay) is:


e. Now hold down alt. The mouse should change to a little square with an arrow. When you see that, left-click once.

f. The pattern should now basically overlay seamlessly onto the Tinker base, like this:



g. If parts of your pattern show up over the Tinker base - like on the clothes hanger - you can just erase them on the pattern layer. I usually turn the opacity on the pattern layer down quite low so I can see through it and see where I want to erase, but I'm sure there's tons of other ways. Having anti-aliasing off for this erasing is usually best.

h. GLORIOUS TINKER IMAGES.

i. Save what you've done so you can just replace the pattern layer for the next time you make the same kind of clothing item.

I use Paint Shop Pro, not Photoshop, so this may be different, but I use the paint bucket dump to color tinker templates! I select the pattern as the texture, and then just click to fill the template. T-shirts are a little trickier, I use the paint brush for those.
