Today is Schooling Saturday, a day dedicated to learning new things! Teach yourself a new babyz-related skill today, such as hexing something you've never hexed before. There will also be a new tutorial released each Schooling Saturday.
Everyone who posts the results of the new skill they have learned today will earn 100 caps! Please note that the skill must be babyz-related and preferably have to do with hexing, though it can also be something like learning to make banners if you don't normally or using a microphone to take your photos for the first time. Collect caps in the transactions thread once you have posted.
See below post for this week's tutorial: Photoshop Actions!
in this tutorial i'm going to teach you how to use photoshop actions! i've noticed that a lot of people don't know how to use them and they honestly make life so much easier so i thought i'd share! this tutorial is done with photoshop cs6 but should be similar/the same for other versions of photoshop.
so if you're not sure what a photoshop action does, it's basically a way to reduce your tedious editing process down to one click! you can "record" your full process once and then every time you want to do it again you just click the button to "play" the action and watch as it does all the work for you! i have my entire babyz picture editing process simplified into a few different actions and it makes everything go so much faster.
STEP ONE: THE ACTIONS PANE
if you don't have the actions pane open on your photoshop workspace, go to window > actions to bring it up.
so this is the actions pane! as you can see, i have a ton of actions for editing various different things quickly, because i am way too lazy to do a million tedious editing steps all the time.
on the bottom, there are icons which do different things. the little circle records your action, the square on the left of it stops recording, the triangular play button "plays" the action to make it happen. the folder button makes a little expand/collapse folder like my "babyz" and "sims" ones above so you can organize your actions, the folded page button beside that starts a new action (which automatically starts recording one), and the trash can button is to delete a step or action.
STEP TWO: CREATE YOUR ACTION
open a new document. for milk things, i normally make it 650x650 so i know it will not be resized by the forum, but obviously you can make it any size you like! for this tutorial, i'm going to be creating an action with some basic text effects that i always use. i'm going to need a little board image for pokemon week so i'm going to make that!
if you want to organize your actions into folders like i do, click the "folder" button and name the folder what you would like. as you can see, i have named mine "text" because this action is going to run my usual text effects. to start recording a new action, click the "new action" button, which looks like a folded page. i have circled the button in the screenshot above.
clicking the "new action" button will bring up this window. name your action something descriptive so you'll remember what it's for. you can select which folder ("set") you want it to be in here, and if you want to you can also choose a keyboard shortcut key for it and a color label to further organize the action. i don't do the colors because i find just grouping them into folders to be enough.
once you're happy with your settings, click "record".
once the dialog box goes away, you'll notice that the circular "record" button will be automatically pressed and has turned red. that means any step you do in photoshop will now be recorded.
now, just do your editing steps as you normally would!
as you can see in my example above, everything i've done to the text has been recorded in steps in the action pane. when you're finished with everything you want the action to record, press the square "stop" button, which i've circled above.
congratulations, you've created an action!
STEP THREE: USING YOUR ACTION
okay, so you made an action! cool! now, how do you use it?
to use your action in the future, simply open the photo (or type the text) you want to edit, select the action you want to use, press the triangular "play" button, and watch as the magic happens.
voila! instantly, photoshop does all the steps for you, and all you had to do was click a button!
OPTIONAL STEP: MENU ITEMS
so, actions record just about anything you do, but you'll notice that they may not automatically record some menu items such as "save as" etc. but they can! if you'd like a menu selection to be included in your action, go to the actions pane and click the little button in the right hand corner. it looks like this:
clicking that will bring up an options menu. select "insert menu item".
clicking that will bring up this window. then just click on the menu option you wanted, and it will record.
and that's all! i hope that's helpful for you. if you have any questions feel free to ask :)
Oo that's cool Photoshop actually helps you alleviate work!
I think I found something for me to try today. I've never hexed off the storybook so if I have time I'll try that. (Also can anyone point me to where the files are to hex off the addballs doll and bear? Thanks!)
