After months of swearing at my laptop that my mic wont work in game.. iv noticed it works when my earphones ARENT plugged in but once its lit yellow and showing its working and your kids are grinning ear to ear you can put your earphones BACK in and continue playing 
For some reason it stops it working initially and needs your earphones unplugged first.. No idea if this is common knowledge but if you are tearing your hair out with a tempermental mic, this might work x
