I don't really expect anyone to have an answer to this problem because it's so specific, but I figured I'd give it a try anyhow
I own a Mac, and can play Babyz fairly well on it. I followed all the instructions on Becky's mac installation tutorial , but never got it to work. I run on Mojave, and from I read online, the error I keep getting ("oops! no new executables found") is a problem Wine encounters with Mojave.
So I gave up on that, and managed to make the game work with PlayOnMac, which uses Wine, only presented with a different interface. Just like Wine, it creates a virtual drive C. I'm super glad that it works so perfectly, apart from the record player that plays no audio, and ViaVoice. I installed PetzA as well just fine.
I have installed ViaVoice repeatedly, from the .exe that came with my Babyz game download, to Carolyn's vvcr file, to the alternative download link provided here on milk. I go through the entire installation process, which makes me create a user etc. However I'm not sure if there's some point I'm supposed to link ViaVoice to Babyz – in any case, I never get any prompt for that. At the end of the installation, there is a ViaVoice file in my virtual Babyz drive C, as there should be.
The installation works to some extent. When I start the game, VoiceRec isn't greyed out in the Menu anymore (I couldn't click on Voice Rec before I tried installing ViaVoice). But I get an error that IBM VIaVoice Family Model couldn't be found. that if I select ViaVoice Set Up Microphone, I get an error message like this one, telling me it could not "use or find a required component (SmartUS.dll)". Still in the VoiceRec tab in Babyz, If I explore the IBM ViaVoice Options, I'm led to a ViaVoice "Audio Setup Wizard" which eventually tells me a "problem occured while trying to use your audio mixer for playback."
There there there. Sorry for the loooong message, I just wanted to get all the info out there if by some miracle someone actually knows how I could get ViaVoice working. I sure wish I could talk to my Babyz, haha! When I owned the game as a child, I didn't have a microphone either, so it's kind of an unfulfilled dream lol.
Haha, miracle, it somehow worked for the first time after houuurs of trying. I'm so glad! If anyone is interested in playing the game with PlayonMac because they're having issues with Wine, please add to this thread and I can try to help!
